Wireless Communications: The Future

Predicting the future is an essential element for almost everyone involved in the wireless industry. Manufacturers predict the future when they decide on product lines to develop or research to undertake, operators when they buy licences and deploy networks, and academics when they set PhD topics. Wireless Communications: The Future provides a solid, clear and well-argued basis on which to make these predictions.

Starting with a description of the current situation and a look at how previous predictions made in 2000 have fared, the book then provides the contributions of six eminent experts from across the wireless industry. Based on their input and a critical analysis of the current situation, it derives detailed forecasts for 2011 through to 2026. This leads to implications across all of the different stakeholders in the wireless industry and views on key developments.
Presents clear and unambiguous predictions, not a range of scenarios from which the user has to decide
Includes chapters covering existing wireless systems which provide solid tutorial material across a wide range of wireless devices
Offers a range of views of the future from high profile contributors in various areas of the industry and from around the globe, including contributions from Vodafone and Motorola
Provides a comprehensive guide to current technologies, offering keen analysis of key drivers, end user needs and key economic and regulatory constraints

This book, compiled by a renowned author with a track record of successful prediction, is an essential read for strategists working for wireless manufacturers, wireless operators and device manufacturers, regulators and professionals in the telecoms industry, as well as those studying the topic or with a general interest in the future of wireless communications.

Version Control with Subversion

Book description
Version Control with Subversion introduces the powerful new versioning tool designed to be the successor to CVS. An introduction to Subversion is followed by a guided tour of its capabilities. Later chapters cover more complex topics of branching, repository administration, and other advanced features. If you’ve never used version control, you’ll find everything you need to get started. And if you’re a seasoned CVS pro, it will help you make a painless leap into Subversion.

One of the greatest frustrations in most software projects is version control: the art of managing changes to information. Today’s increasingly fast pace of software development–as programmers make small changes to software one day only to undo them the next–has only heightened the problem; consecutive work on code or single-programmer software is a rare sight these days. Without careful attention to version control, concurrent and collaborative work can create more headaches than it solves. This is where Subversion comes into play. Written by members of the Subversion open source development team, Version Control with Subversion introduces the powerful new versioning tool designed to be the successor to the Concurrent Version System or CVS. CVS users will find the “look and feel” Subversion comfortably familiar, but under the surface it’s far more flexible, robust, and usable, and more importantly, it improves on CVS’s more notable flaws. The book begins with a general introduction to Subversion, the basic concepts behind version control, and a guided tour of Subversion’s capabilities and structure. With thorough attention to detail, the authors cover every aspect of installing and configuring Subversion for managing a programming project, documentation, or any other team-based endeavor. Later chapters cover the more complex topics of branching, repository administration, and other advanced features such as properties, externals, and access control. The book ends with reference material and appendices covering a number of useful topics such as a Subversion complete reference and troubleshooting guide. Version Control with Subversion aims to be useful to readers of widely different backgrounds, from those with no previous experience in version control to experienced sysadmins. If you’ve never used version control, you’ll find everything you need to get started in this book. And if you’re a seasoned CVS pro, this book will help you make a painless leap into Subversion.

UNIX Hints and Hacks

Book Description
UNIX Hints & Hacks is designed to instantly reward you through increased productivity and satisfaction with UNIX. Each and every hint and/or hack provides real value–not just a list of obvious procedures marked as secrets. Learn UNIX administration skills you can apply daily with UNIX workstations and servers. Discover networking tricks to make modifications safely over the network. Tackle security issues such as dealing with SuperUser accounts, permissions, and vulnerabilities in the UNIX operating system. Develop various ways to monitor the system logs and load averages, to aid in the tuning, fixing, and security. Also learn to add, manipulate, and modify user accounts in new ways, and improve your file management skills for modifying, viewing, and executin. With UNIX Hints & Hacks you’ll look up from the reading and say, “I can’t wait to try that!”

Amazon.com
Unix Hints & Hacks covers the science and art of Unix system administration comprehensively. While its title implies that this is a how-to recipe book for running and maintaining Unix machines–and you will find a lot of shell trickery detailed here–there’s much more to this book than commands and procedures.

Much of Unix Hints & Hacks contains explicit solutions to problems that pop up on Unix machines. (Waingrow covers AT&T- and BSD-derivative kernels, along with several shells.) For each of the scores of situations he covers, such as those in sections like “Moving and Renaming Groups of Files” and “Troubleshooting ASCII Terminals,” Waingrow presents a handful of solutions and explains scenarios in which each works best. Where appropriate, he provides listings of command shell scripts and explains how they work. Coverage includes user administration, file management, networking, resource monitoring, and security.

On top of his technical coverage, Waingrow includes generally ignored insights that concern the human side of administering systems. He offers advice on working with users who are experiencing trouble, suggestions for getting approval from managers for the equipment you want, and hints for developing healthy relationships with vendors’ representatives.

He also presents his thoughts on applying for employment as a Unix administrator. You’ll find hints on preparing a résumé that adequately represents your skill set, and the book gives you a feel for the kinds of technical stumpers you might be asked in an interview. –David Wall

About the Author
Kirk Waingrow currently runs the largest Unix resource on the Internet — The Unix Guru Universe (ugu). Over the last 4 years, Kirk has worked with over 17,000 unix administrators —learning what their needs and wants in resource material is. This book is put together from data Kirk compiled over the years that typically isn’t available to the average Unix Administrator. Recently, Kirk installed a 1.5 Terabyte server system for Disney.

The Linux Cookbook

Product Description
The Linux Cookbook, 2nd Edition is your guide to getting the most out of Linux. Organized by general task (such as working with text, managing files, and manipulating graphics), each section contains a series of step-by-step recipes that help you to get your work done quickly and efficiently, most often from the command line. Nearly 50 percent larger than the first edition, this new edition includes hundreds of new recipes as well as new sections on package management; file conversion; multimedia; working with sound files (including OGG and MP3); Vi text editing; advanced text manipulation; and more. Perfect as an introduction to Linux, or as a desktop reference for the seasoned user. Covers the major Linux distributions. “…the next best thing to having your own personal guru.” — UnixReview.com (praise for the first edition)

From the Author
I wrote this book because I want everyone to know how to use free (or “open source”) software, because I think everyone deserves the freedom that comes with it. Linux is becoming ever more powerful and popular, and the free software movement is gaining ground — everyone should know what it is all about, and how they can use it in their lives.

Linux isn’t hard to use, but if you’re used to a completely different way of doing things, you might need someone to show you what to do. When you want to use your computer to do some task, you can break down the task into a “recipe” — and that’s what I’ve done to make it easy to use Linux. And anyone can follow a recipe.

This book aims to give all of the easiest and most effective “recipes” for people who want to use a Linux-based computer system to get things done.

Proprietary software denies you the freedoms that should be your right. You deserve better than that; you deserve the freedom of free software. Learn how to get it with THE LINUX COOKBOOK.

Michael Stutz, August 2001 –This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

About the Author
Michael Stutz has used Linux exclusively for over a decade. He was the first to apply the “open source” methodology of Linux to non-software works, and was one of the first reporters to cover Linux and the free software movement in the mainstream press.

Slackware linux essentials

What is Slackware Linux?
The Official Release of Slackware Linux by Patrick Volkerding is an advanced Linux operating system, designed with the twin goals of ease of use and stability as top priorities. Including the latest popular software while retaining a sense of tradition, providing simplicity and ease of use alongside flexibility and power, Slackware brings the best of all worlds to the table.

Originally developed by Linus Torvalds in 1991, the UNIX®-like Linux operating system now benefits from the contributions of millions of users and developers around the world. Slackware Linux provides new and experienced users alike with a fully-featured system, equipped to serve in any capacity from desktop workstation to machine-room server. Web, ftp, and email servers are ready to go out of the box, as are a wide selection of popular desktop environments. A full range of development tools, editors, and current libraries is included for users who wish to develop or compile additional software.

The Slackware Philosophy
Since its first release in April of 1993, the Slackware Linux Project has aimed at producing the most “UNIX-like” Linux distribution out there. Slackware complies with the published Linux standards, such as the Linux File System Standard. We have always considered simplicity and stability paramount, and as a result Slackware has become one of the most popular, stable, and friendly distributions available.

Slackware Overview
Slackware Linux is a complete 32-bit multitasking “UNIX-like” system.i It’s currently based around the 2.4 Linux kernel series and the GNU C Library version 2.3.4 (libc6). It contains an easy to use installation program, extensive online documentation, and a menu-driven package system. A full installation gives you the X Window System, C/C++ development environments, Perl, networking utilities, a mail server, a news server, a web server, an ftp server, the GNU Image Manipulation Program, Netscape Communicator, plus many more programs. Slackware Linux can run on 486 systems all the way up to the latest x86 machines (but uses -mcpu=i686 optimization for best performance on i686-class machines like the P3, P4, and Duron/Athlon).

Server Load Balancing

Book description
Load balancing distributes traffic efficiently among network servers so that no individual server is overburdened. This vendor-neutral guide to the concepts and terminology of load balancing offers practical guidance to planning and implementing the technology in most environments. It includes a configuration guide with diagrams and sample configurations for installing, configuring, and maintaining products from the four major server load balancing vendors.

Load balancing improves network performance by distributing traffic efficiently so that individual servers are not overwhelmed by sudden fluctuations in activity. Server Load Balancing is a guide to this critical component of high availability, clustering, and fault tolerance, all of which provide the infrastructure for reliable Internet sites and large corporate networks. Much of the information on load balancing comes from vendor-specific manuals that use inconsistent terminology and are often biased toward the products they cover. Server Load Balancing explains to engineers and technicians the concepts and terminology of load balancing and offers practical guidance for planning and implementing it in almost any environment. It includes a configuration guide with diagrams and sample configurations for installing, configuring, and maintaining products from the four major vendors:

* Alteon WebSystems
* Cisco’s CSS Series (formerly ArrowPoint)
* F5’s BIG-IP
* the Foundry ServerIron series

By comparing several load balancing products, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the technology and how best to use it to improve your network performance. No system administrator responsible for traffic management should be without this practical guide.

The Python 2.1 Bible provides the only complete Python language reference on the market and includes all the information and software that developers need to use Python as a rapid application development tool.

The Python 2.1 Bible fills a critical void in the Python reference market. Although it includes a complete Python language reference section, it is still geared towards those of you who already have some programming experience. This book explains each piece of technology in depth and shows through clear examples why each feature is useful. This is the manual you’ve been waiting for — the one that covers all major Python components without glossing over how the various pieces fit together.

About the Author
About the Authors Dave Brueck is a professional software developer who loves to use Python whenever possible. His current projects include developing networked games, developing Python interfaces to his stockbroker’s C SDK, and plotting to overturn various world governments. Previously Dave was a contributing author to 3D Studio Max R3 Bible by Kelly Murdock, published by Hungry Minds (formerly IDG Books Worldwide). Stephen Tanner is currently using Python to build a black-box software testing framework. His side projects include Python tools to perform probabilistic derivatives-trading analysis, and to download mass quantities of .mp3s. Aside from their “real” jobs, Dave and Stephen enjoy convincing people to pay them big bucks for consulting jobs.

Programming the Perl DBI

Book description
The primary interface for database programming in Perl is DBI. Programming the Perl DBI is coauthored by Alligator Descartes, one of the most active members of the DBI community, and by Tim Bunce, the inventor of DBI. The book explains the architecture of DBI, shows you how to write DBI-based programs, and reveals both DBI’s nuances and the peculiarities of each individual DBD. This is the definitive book for database programming in Perl.

One of the greatest strengths of the Perl programming language is its ability to manipulate large amounts of data. Database programming is therefore a natural fit for Perl, not only for business applications but also for CGI-based web and intranet applications. The primary interface for database programming in Perl is DBI. DBI is a database-independent package that provides a consistent set of routines regardless of what database product you use–Oracle, Sybase, Ingres, Informix, you name it. The design of DBI is to separate the actual database drivers (DBDs) from the programmer’s API, so any DBI program can work with any database, or even with multiple databases by different vendors simultaneously. Programming the Perl DBI is coauthored by Alligator Descartes, one of the most active members of the DBI community, and by Tim Bunce, the inventor of DBI. For the uninitiated, the book explains the architecture of DBI and shows you how to write DBI-based programs. For the experienced DBI dabbler, this book reveals DBI’s nuances and the peculiarities of each individual DBD. The book includes:

* An introduction to DBI and its design
* How to construct queries and bind parameters
* Working with database, driver, and statement handles
* Debugging techniques
* Coverage of each existing DBD
* A complete reference to DBI

This is the definitive book for database programming in Perl.

Professional Java JDK 6 Edition

What is this book about?
Professional Java builds upon Ivor Horton’s Beginning Java to provide
the reader with an understanding of how professionals use Java to
develop software solutions. Pro Java starts with an overview of best
methods and tools for developing Java applications. It then examines the
the more sophisticated and nuanced parts of the Java JDK. The final and
most extensive part of the book shows how to implement these ideas to
build real-world applications, using both Java APIs as well as related
Java open source tools. In short, this book provides a comprehensive
treatment of the professional Java development process, without losing
focus in exhaustive coverage of isolated features and APIs.

Do you want the ability to manage documents, photos, and other content
over the Web but don’t want to shell out thousands of dollars in
proprietary solutions? Want to create an online community for your hobby
or user group? You’re not alone. For thousands of like-minded around the
globe, the answer is Joomla!, an open source content management system
used to manage all sorts of data over the Web.

While Joomla! is relatively easy to install, a fair amount of knowledge is required in
order to configure the application to your specific needs. Beginning
Joomla! answers many of the questions you’re sure to have, guiding you
through the process of creating your own design templates, adding and
managing content, and adding popular community features such as article
commenting, user profile management, and forums. Later chapters discuss
e-commerce integration, explore search engine optimization, and show you
how to extend Joomla! by creating your own plug-ins.
